Starting up, Managing and Working with Agility in Distribution

room: Trondheimsalen 2 (capacity 180) — time: Friday 13:45-14:30, Friday 13:00-13:45, Friday 15:00-15:45, Friday 15:45-16:30
Level: Practicing

This workshop aims to share experiences on implementing, managing and leveraging agile practices in globally distributed projects. The workshop will set the scene for an edited book on practicing agile distributed software projects published by Springer in 2010 - www.springer.com/computer/swe/book/978-3-642-12441-9. The content will be based on a combination of research and industrial presentations offered by the authors of book. Participants will engage in discussions and develop an understanding of dos and don’ts through a synergy of experiences from industrial companies.

Process/Mechanics

The workshop will be organized around presentations, question sessions and panel discussions. The presentations will be based on 5-W&H- technique, that will ease the understanding and comparison of the findings across the presentations. A summary of experiences from the book chapters will be illustrated by a poster. This will be used for starting a panel discussion towards a deeper understanding of different strategies applied for agile distributed projects. Deserved attention will be paid to the interaction among the participants, encouraging discussions and experience sharing.

Organizers: Darja Smite, Richard Torkar and Samireh Jalali (Blekinge Institute of Technology). Panelists: Frank Mauer, Cristiano Sadun, Xinfeng Wang, Jan-Erik Sandberg, Lars Arne Skar, Joachim Sauer, Jutta Eckstein, Casper Lassenius, Maria Paasiavaara, Jakub Rudzki

Learning outcomes
  • Participants will learn the answers to Who, What, Where, When, Why and How (5-W&H) in relation to implementing different agile practices in globally distributed projects
  • Discussions around different implementation strategies will aim to bring out the list of unavoidable shortcomings and necessary compromises
