Scrum Master group therapy

room: Lade gård (capacity 20) — time: Tuesday 13:00-13:45, Tuesday 13:45-14:30
Level: Practicing

This will be an interactive workshop where the Scrum Masters will be able to share their frustrations and experiences with others in a similar situation. The main purpose is to help Scrum Masters to work systematically with process improvement. One key point here is to understand the difference between “a real problem” and compliance with a model. Removing impediments may be seen as the main task of the Scrum Master, but how do we ensure that we attack the most important ones? How do we avoid sub-optimization? What kind of fact should we collect to understand the severity of the problem?

Process/Mechanics

The workshop is split in two parts:

Part 1 (45 mins): Presentation: The Scrum Master Role - some useful skills and thinking tools
Examples of Skills and Thinking tools:
* Improvement thinking: Plan-Do-Check-Act, Kaizen
* Learning by experience: Conducting efficient retrospectives
* What is waste?
* How to understand end-to-end processes and process efficiency
* “Looking through customer glasses” in collaboration with the Product Owner
* Strategic improvement in collaboration with Management
* Root Cause Analysis. “5 whys”

Part 2 (45 mins): Workshop: a discussion of real problems; Root cause analysis
Some examples of problems to analyse in the workshop:
* Team always over-commits
* Product Backlog too immature at Sprint Planning
* Very time consuming release process
* Too many bugs found at a too late stage
* Scrum seems to work fine, customer still unhappy
* Unable to prioritize by real customer value
* Missing market window
* Hard to get team self managed and to have collective ownership
* … well, the list is endless - these are just examples… Bring your own!!
