Welcome to the Trust Spiral! Going up?

Level: Introductory

Agile development requires trust, but will also create trust. Agile is a positive trust spiral. Non-agile development is based on distrust, and will create distrust. Agile development cannot happen until all stakeholders have turned the trust spiral around. In this workshop we will explore techniques to initiate trust in a not yet agile organisation. Using ideas from appreciative inquiry, we identify situations that initiated trust in us. We discuss the prerequisites, properties and results of the techniques used. Then we explore other situations where the techniques also could be applied.

Process/Mechanics

Introduction to the workshop. 15 minutes General discussion on trust and distrust in development organisations. Intro to appreciative inquiry thoughts. Find the things we are good at and see if we can do more of that. Vote 1-10 on trustlevel within the group.

Break up into smaller groups of 4-5 persons. 20 minutes Let someone tell a story where trust was initiated or amplified. Try to define a technique or method used in the story and give it a short name. Discuss prequisites, properties, feelings and result of that technique or method. Discuss where is could be used in a not yet agile development organisation to initiate or amplify trust. Repeat if time’s not up

Present the technique and methods to the whole group. The workshop leader will prepare some sort of organisation visualization board and some sort of form/card that can be used to describe the techniques and methods that are though of. During the workshop more techniques and methods will be mapped to the organisation, and this will serve as documentation of the workshop afterwards and can be displayed in the hallways for the rest of the conference to admire. :-) First presentation round ca 10 minutes.

5 minutes break

Another breakup into small groups. Same thing. 20 minutes. Another presentation at the board. 10 minutes.

Workshop wrap up. Revote 1-10 on trustlevel within the group. Summation of the results. Short retro on workshop. 10 minutes

  • How to initiate trust in different parts of an organisation.
  • How to recognize signs of trust and amplify it.
  • A taste of appreciative inquiry.
