Embrace Diversity: Techniques to make our differences work for us.
Diversity means many things to many people. For the purpose of this session we will be considering diversity in very simple and clear terms.
‘The unique and rich collection of each person’s experiences formed from many channels such as gender, religion, ethnicity etc, that provides them a rich toolkit for social interaction and problem solving’
In this interactive session, we share tools and techniques for discovering and collating diversity and demonstrate how we can tap into this rich mine of collated experiences to improve team effectiveness and dynamics.
Our session consists of about 30 - 40 mins of explanations punctuated with short practical exercises (‘Try This’) and then 45 minutes of audience involved workshop (consisting of games, simulation and discussion)
- 10m : What Diversity Is (and isn’t). We introduce the session and offer our definition:
- 05m : Try This: What does diversity mean to you?
- 10m : How Diversity Can Improve ANY Team: We offer a practical approach for embracing of diversity that will work for any group of people.
- 05m : Try This: What are we missing?
- 10m : Without Diversity - a control test for each group to solve a number of challenges without applying the approach above.
- 15m : Mine Your Experiences. A groups exercise (max 4 per group) to discover experiences through story telling, appreciative enquiry and powerful questions. Collated through mind maps and story retelling.
- 15m : Learn your Lenses. In rotating pairs within the groups using directed questions and improvisational techniques, we identify how the group members primarily engage with the world in certain given contexts (work, home, being under pressure etc).
- 10m : Leverage Diversity for Improvement: A repeat of the previous set of challenges in (5) above, this time using the diversity information they have gathered. We compare results and draw conclusions.
- 10m: Debrief and Q&A. An open discussion to debrief what we have explored and to address questions from the participants. Close.
- An appreciation of the richness of diversity
- A case for further study into the benefits of diversity for any team
- Tools and techniques and a format to try this when you get home!
